After last night's awards show, there is one main event that is on everyone's minds. Will Smith smacking Chris Rock right across the face.
The legendary actor and family man got on the Oscars stage following a joke made by the comedian and host of that round, Chris Rock. Rock made a GI Jane reference aimed at Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. This joke was presumably made due to Jada being bald, a decision that she made after being diagnosed with alopecia.
Was the joke necessarily tasteful? No. Did Smith do the right thing? Depends on who you ask.
The best part of this whole interaction was the fact that a mere 20 or so minutes later, Smith won Best Actor for his performance as Venus and Serena Williams' father in "King Richard."
Following the turmoil that ensued on my social media, I wanted to find out more about Will and Jada's relationship. I was already aware that their marriage has long drawn attention from the public. There have been rumors for years about them being divorced, separated, in an open relationship, in a "life partnership" and not to mention Jada's "entanglements."
While doing my late-night, post-awards show research I came across Will Smith's self-titled biography. "Will" was published in November 2021 and depicts some of the greatest struggles and accomplishments Smith has faced in life.
In his review for the Washington Post, Charles Arrowsmith wrote "This is the story Smith wants to tell about his life: that of a fierce drive for success rooted in powerful feelings of inadequacy. Unfortunately, what feels like real anguish — and the seed of a worthwhile read — is repeatedly obscured by braggadocio and pat moralizing."
The review is both critical and very insightful into what made Will smith the way he is today. Both as an actor and apparently, a protective husband.
